Giant pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo stems, shoots and leaves. Occasionally they eat carrots, apples and other vegetation, but bamboo accounts for 99 percent of their diet. Due to the lack of nutrients in the plant, pandas need to consume huge amounts of it in order to build up sufficient energy.
