Centuries before Charles Goodyear patented the vulcanization process that revolutionized the use of rubber in the 19th century, the ancient Mesoamericans were already exploring the versatile properties of rubber. Derived from the sap of local trees, like the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and morning glory species, this material was integral to their daily and ritual lives. They developed a method to process latex—a milky white fluid extracted from these trees—into a durable, elastic material.
