On October 2, 1990, the Martha Graham Dance Company premiered MAPLE LEAF RAG at New York City Center. This light-hearted ballet is set to Scott Joplin’s classic ragtime jam, a nostalgic tune from Martha’s teenage years, and features Calvin Klein costumes ranging from iridescent unitards to flowing silken skirts. “Louis, play me the MAPLE LEAF RAG!” is the titular opening line in Martha Graham’s MAPLE LEAF RAG (1990). The phrase alludes to Martha’s relationship with her long-time accompanist, mentor, and lover, Louis Horst, and how he often played her Scott Joplin’s ragtime tune to lift her spirits.
